From my mentorship, I have gained a vast amount of knowledge about the medical field. Not only have I learned about many diseases and treatments, but I have also learned how to take care of patients and what it is like to work in the hospital and family care setting. I have seen many different patients, with different age ranges and different illnesses. I have stepped in and asked my mentors and the other nurses if they ever needed any help, which helped me gain more knowledge and experience. I also asked questions when I didn't understand something to ensure that I knew what I was exposed to. I also asked nurses, doctors, and physicians assistants what their experience was like as a student, so I will know what to expect and the difficulty of each occupation. This mentorship has prepared me for the future by giving me a hands-on experience. I have been able to see the different settings in the medical field and it reveals to me what my career will be like on average. My mentorship has also changed my perception in the sense that I know what specific fields I do not want to go in, but I still want to be a physician's assistant. I have also concluded that I might work in a fast pace setting, such as the emergency room in my earlier years of life and go into a less stressful atmosphere as I get older. I would advise the future HMP students to make the most of their time at their mentorships because it is valuable time that can be used to determine their futures. It is also useful to alternate mentorships to get a complex view of different fields or careers of interest.
